Home Desks

Our office desk dealers currently only offer desks and tables for businesses. Please refer to our helpful content below for information about selecting the right desk for your home.

Types of home desks
The main difference among home desks is the material used in their construction, typically wood, laminate, or metal.

  • While wood is considered to be the best looking-material, it tends to scar and must be treated to maintain its appearance.
  • Laminate is a plastic finish applied to a wood core. It comes in a wide array of patterns, from wood grain to color finishes, and is less expensive than wood but not as durable.
  • Metal desks provide maximum durability, but they are usually an option for businesses. However, a metal desk might be suited for garages or anywhere you work on home improvements.

Evaluating home desks

Wood desks - The higher-quality wood desks include drawers with metal suspension rollers for maximum sturdiness. Check that the drawers open and close smoothly and open far enough to reach into the back. The main difference between wood desks and desks made from other materials is the drawers may have an interlocking design instead of being connected by glue or staples. Finally, check the bottom of the drawers; premium desks typically include a stronger grade of wood.

Laminate desks - Check if the laminate used is thin which is typical in lower-cost laminate desks, or a thick, high pressure laminate that can withstand daily abuse like stains, watermarks, and scratches. Consider laminate desks with rounded corners rather than squared-off corners. It costs a little more but provides a level of safety if you have young children walking around your home office.

Metal desks - You can tell the quality of metal desks by looking at the gauge of steel used. Examine the quality by feeling how solid the construction is and examining the desks’ overall weight. Also, make sure that all the drawers close properly so it looks neat.

Home desk safety
If you plan to use a computer at your desk, make sure you practice safe ergonomics to reduce strain and prevent injury.

Your keyboard should be set at a comfortable height, particularly if you’ll work at a computer for long periods of time. An adjustable keyboard platform or moveable legs can help you easily customize the right height depending on who uses the computer at a given time. You should also be able to easily reach a mouse, telephone or any other item within arm’s reach.

Consider where your wires will be. Since computers, phones, and other devices can have countless wires to manage, you may want desks with wiring holes so you can pull the wires through and keep them neatly compiled all in a central area. This prevents having wires that hang over your desk and could get knotted up.

Home desk costs
Expect to pay several hundred dollars for a quality desk that will last you and your family a long time. The typical lifespan of a desk is 5 to 15 years, and those made from better materials can last even longer. With better quality desks, you won’t have to replace your home furniture as frequently.

Furniture retailers will have varying policies about delivery and installation. Some will often self-assembly desks that you pick up and set up on your own. These desks cost less but require more work. Others will deliver and even assemble your desk, but you may have to pay an additional service fee if it isn’t included in your price.
