Typewriters: Product Overview

Even though they've been supplanted by computers in almost all their applications, typewriters refuse to disappear completely. They're still found in many offices, clattering away to fill out standardized forms, address envelopes, and handle other specialized tasks.

Modern electric typewriters come with a range of features to help create professional-looking results:

  • Multiple fonts – Typewriters with 10, 12, and 15 pitch fonts let you choose the right size letters for your documents, and proportional spacing gives a more modern look.
  • Spell check – It's not just for computers! Some typewriters have built-in spell checkers to proof your work as you go.
  • LCD displays – Usually just 1 or 2 lines, LCD displays let you see what you're typing before it's committed to paper.
  • Auto-correct – Lets you make a correction simply by hitting backspace – no need to switch to the correcting ribbon and retype. May include automatic correction of an entire word or line.
  • Formatting options – While standard in word processing software, features like bold, underline, superscript, and subscript were innovative additions when they first appeared.
  • Reprint – Makes a duplicate of the page you just typed – save a trip to the copier.
  • Forms completion – "Learns" the layout of the forms you fill out most often and automatically formats its output to match.

You'll have to choose whether you want a new or reconditioned typewriter. New typewriters come with more substantial warranties, better peace of mind, and higher price tags.

If you decide to buy a reconditioned model, make sure it has been thoroughly cleaned, lubricated, inspected, and that the dealer offers at least a 60 day warranty. Also make sure you can easily get replacement ribbons and other supplies.
