Comparing LCD Screen Manufacturers
Written By: Steven Bryan
With a huge variety of liquid crystal display (LCD) monitors on the market, it's a perfect time to replace your old and outdated computer displays. It's important, though, to look for LCD screen manufacturers that make monitors which meet all your business requirements.
Check the monitor's specifications
Although most flat-screen displays look pretty much the same right out of the box, there are definite differences between models. When researching LCD screen manufacturers, make sure to take the following factors into consideration:
- Screen Size: If you plan on replacing old cathode ray tube (CRT) workstations, most LCD screen manufacturers make 15- and 17-inch monitors that fit comfortably on employee desktops. For conference rooms, you may want to consider LCD screen manufacturers who make larger-size displays that can be mounted on the wall.
- Response time: The image on a monitor typically is composed of millions of pixels, each a dot of light. When buying a new LCD panel display, you want to find one in which the pixels change color quickly. A fast "response time" keeps onscreen images looking smooth and clean.
A good response time is 12-15 milliseconds; a slower rate becomes annoying, especially when watching video or animation.
- Contrast ratio: As in a regular television, contrast represents the difference between the maximum light and darkness that a display can support. When talking about LCD monitors, the higher the ratio, the better your display will look. Ratios of 400:1 and higher are preferred for general office work; 1000:1 or more is better for movies or other demanding applications. Note that "dynamic contrast ratios" can inflate these numbers artificially, so look for LCD screen manufacturers that provide the real number.
- Resolution: LCD panel manufacturers create displays that have what is known as the "native resolution." This is the default setting and, if you change the resolution, the display won't look as crisp or sharp. When dealing with the products produced by LCD panel manufacturers, check the native resolution to see if it meets your needs. Many monitors come preset with a resolution of 800 x 600 (800 pixels wide and 600 pixels high).
LCD screen manufacturers
Over the last several years, the number of companies producing LCD displays has grown quite substantially. Some are well known, but a few are the new kids on the block.
- Sony: Long associated with computer monitors and equipment, Sony produces a line of LCD displays with various sizes and resolutions.
- LG Electronics: One of the more recognizable LCD screen manufacturers, LG ("Life's Good") is known for manufacturing flat panel televisions as well as computer monitors.
- Dell: Over the last several years, Dell has emerged as a leading competitor in the electronics industry.
- CoolTouch Monitors: Founded in 2005, CoolTouch is one of the American LCD panel manufacturers that makes products for multimedia companies.
Chances are, most LCD screen manufacturers produce some models that are right for your application. The best way to get a good deal is to talk to multiple dealers so you can compare prices and take a look at several monitors in person before making your choice.
